American Proteins - Cuthbert Wins Clean Water Award


TUCKER, GA – American Proteins in Cuthbert, GA, received Honorable Mention in the full treatment category in U.S. Poultry & Egg Association’s 2011 Clean Water Awards.  A full treatment facility fully reclaims process water before discharging it to a receiving water or land application system.  To be eligible for the award, a facility must have a minimum of two years of compliance within all permit limitations.  The awards are presented annually in recognition of excellence in the operation of water treatment facilities.


The American Proteins plant in Cuthbert recycles inedible poultry parts into valuable protein ingredients used in products such as pet food and livestock feed. Through an aggressive water conservation program, 17 million gallons of water are recycled every day.  The facility’s water conservation program, its commitment to improving the land application system, and the fact that it processes over 2,700 tons/day of chicken by-products from processing plants, are only some of the ways the facility strives to be environmental stewards.


One highlight of their operation features a cover over their anaerobic lagoon to reduce odor emissions and provide for the recovery and reuse of biogas for use in boilers. The facility averages 1.5 million cubic feet of biogas burned per week, which lowers its demand for natural gas and/or diesel fuel.


American Proteins is also active in the local community.  In 2009 and 2010, the facility’s Environmental Manager was involved in teaching a one-day class on the importance of wastewater treatment to the City of Eufaula Middle School 7th Grade Science Class. The facility is working with the local school system to implement the same program in the near future.

The award was presented to Chris Jones, American Proteins’ Environmental Manager, by Dr. Brian Kiepper, University of Georgia, and a member of the selection committee.
